Sully

Media Type: Film Clips Topic: Graphing

This clip is from the film Sully and it illustrates the importance of the scientific method. Specifically,
1. Observe a phenomenon.
2. Develop a hypothesis.
3. Construct a model to test the hypothesis.
4. Look for opportunities to test how well the model works.
5. Revise or refute the theory based on evidence.

In the scene, the air crash review board used a problematic model to test their hypothesis that it was possible to land the plane at LaGuardia without both engines instead of ditching it in the Hudson River. However, the board fails to account for the human element.
